Growing up in Manila has allowed me to develop a very colorful taste palate. I have grown to love foods with a unique blend of different flavors.
One of the Filipino dishes I have learned to love is the famous “Halo-Halo,” which when translated to English literally means “mix mix.” Just like it’s name, the Halo-Halo, is a mix of many different flavors that come together in one glorious bowl.
What you can find in a bowl of Halo-Halo: Shaved Ice, Kaong (Sweet Palm Fruit), Macapuno (Soft meat of the Coconut), Langka (Jackfruit), Monggo (Mung Beans), Saba (Sweet Plantain), Ube (Purple Yam), Mais (Corn), Nata de Coco (Coconut Gelatin), Pinipig (Rice Krispies), Sago (Tapioca Pearls similar to Boba), Garbanzo Beans, Leche Flan (Milk Flan), Grated Cheese (optional), Evaporated Milk, Ice Cream (Vanilla / Cheese / Ube).
My personal favorites are from Chowking and Max’s Restaurant. Chowking because it is the most convenient since there are Chowkings located all over the city, you can even grab it for take out and it will hit the spot. Max’s because it is the one with the creamiest Leche Flan and they never hesitate to give you extra milk!
