It is very rare that I walk into a restaurant and enjoy every single item on the menu. I wouldn’t say that I am a picky eater but I would like to think that my standards are higher than most when it comes to the food that I choose to eat (which is one of the reasons I decided to blog about food). BAKERĒ is definitely a place that stands out for me. Upon walking in, you’ll notice that it looks like a man cave, dressed to look industrial but also has that local feel to it. It has owner, RJ Galang, written all over it. He is clearly a family man who takes pride in being able to share a piece of his childhood with everyone that walks through those doors.
The interior is a cross between industrial and local – so it has all the elements you would find in industrial architecture but with accent pieces that complement the Filipino culture – just take a look at that cork wall and those hanging lamps.
This is definitely a café that stands out from the rest with it’s unique interiors and exceptional menu. Click through to find out more about the menu.
Asian Chicken Salad – I would recommend starting your meal off with something that has light and subtle flavors, just like this Asian Chicken Salad. The smokiness of the chicken is complemented by the flavors from the sesame dressing.
Carbonara – This dish made me feel like I was back in grade school again. Pasta noodles with just the right amount of cream sauce and cheese really brings you back to simpler times. Definitely a dish to order if you’re looking for comfort food.
Lasagna – The serving may look a little smaller in this photo but don’t be fooled, this slice of heaven is packed heavily with meat and cheese and is absolutely bursting with flavor. Topped with a hefty serving of sour cream, this lasagna is sure to satisfy any craving you might have.
Grilled Cheese – A bite of this will take you straight back home in the 90s. This is exactly what a grilled cheese sandwich should taste like. The combination of Mozarella, Cheddar and Quickmelt (yes, Quickmelt!!!) cheeses blend together to give you the perfect creamy flavor and the bread is toasted just enough to give you that crunch!
BXU (Butuan Lechon Sandwich) – Although I have heard many good things about this sandwich, I chose to dig in without any expectations and man, this is one. good. sandwich. It has a very distinct Filipino flavor yet it didn’t feel like a local dish because all the good stuff was put between 2 slices of bread. The lechon was swimming in flavors from the herbs and spices, complemented by the pickled slaw of carrots and cabbage then given an extra crunch with some crispy lechon skin. If you’re going to choose to only one thing to order, this better be it.
And of course, since this is just bursting with flavor, you can decide to go full Filipino by having it over rice –
And for dessert…
Grilled Ensaymada with Bacon Jam – If you’re going to have Bacon Jam, you might as well have the original. This ensaymada is grilled and then topped with Man Eat Manila’s Bacon Jam. It has a sweet and smokey bacon flavor which has been perfected through experimentation. What started out as an experiment will now put all other breakfast jams to shame.
Grilled Ensaymada with Chocolate – Clearly the star of the show and how I would love to start every morning. The taste of the butter, cheese and chocolate come together on a warm, toasty ensaymada that is grilled to perfection. It introduces the flavors with a crunch and then familiarizes you with the flavors with a texture so moist, you will forget what your name is. No, seriously.
Cheese Cupcake – This is what all my friends are getting for Christmas, I’m not even kidding. Once I had a bite of this soft, pillowy cheese cupcake, I knew instantly that this was something that was made to be shared. No wonder Mom, Eleanor Galang, and also the “E” in Bakere, has been getting all the attention for her work ever since the 80s. The cupcake is not too sweet so you can taste the cheesiness, it is moist and having just one piece will not be enough. Trust me.
Ever since I have eaten in this place, it is how I want to start every single morning. Kapitolyo residents have no idea how lucky they are.
